Excerpts taken from Hazrat Shaykh Sayyed Muhammad Talha Qasmi Naqshbandi Damat Barkatuhum’s discourses

One of the things I want to bring to the attention of everyone is of diseases that surfaces eventually amongst generations, being an extremist (in nature) and not letting go of shortcomings. Any work that has numerous people involved will witness mistakes in some aspect or the other. Therefore one should learn to ignore mistakes and work together, InshaaAllah this has more Khair (Allah’s blessings). If someone bad mouth about Islam because of our mistakes then we request to not look at our deeds but the principles of Islam.
In a similar manner my friends, if I am associated with the work of Dawah (refers to Tabligh Jamat) and I make mistakes then it is my individual shortcoming, it is not the message of the Tabligh Jamat, likewise if I am a tutor at a Madrasa and make mistakes, then it is my shortcoming as an individual not the principles of the Madrasa and if I make mistakes sitting in a Khanqah, then the mistake is mine alone and not that of the Khanqah. The mistake we make is that we look at individuals and judge them on their efforts. An effort cannot be judged by the measures of an individual alone neither here, nor there or elsewhere. This mistake is being committed by all of us, may Allah protect us from these mistakes. Human nature is filled with mistakes and it is through the guidance of the Ambiya( علیہم السلام ) that these mistakes are corrected and a balance is acquired (between mistakes and corrective actions).

The significance of the Ummah(people) of Prophet Muhammad (Salallahu Alayhi Wa’sallam ) that has been said by Allah is that of being balanced, “We have made you a balanced Ummah”. Being balanced is a very significant attribute. The Prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wa’sallam) shared with us that, there will be mistakes, who will then bring the balance? No Prophet will arrive after the Prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wa’sallam). The Prophet (Salallahu alayhi Wa’sallam) said, “I am the last Prophet, there will be no prophet after me”. No prophet will arrive after the Prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wa’sallam). It used to be the work of the Prophets to bring balance in an environment of mistakes, now if mistakes are encountered who will perform the work of bringing that balance. The Prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wa’sallam) said there will be mistakes (in my Ummah) as they were witnessed in the people of Bani Israel. The work that has to be done (of correcting people), the work that was done by the prophets of Bani Israel of correcting people, who will do that? From amongst my people the Ulama (scholars of Islam) will do that work. God forbid, if the Ulama start making mistakes then who else will take up this work? Therefore, there is a need to first bring about that balance in the Ulama. They become scholars of knowledge in word and spirit. They become scholars of Islamic Jurisprudence in word and spirit. Yours truly normally says we consider the first one as a shortcoming (of not acquiring the knowledge of the book) and have ignored the other one (spiritual knowledge). If someone goes astray in Islamic Jurisprudence by the book then we consider it a mistake, it is indeed a mistake. If someone thinks that having the Quran and Hadith are sufficient for us to perform deeds by looking into it, then there are numerous lives in front of us that such people go astray and have become useless. These people become the slave of their desires. We consider a mistake in Islamic Jurisprudence by the book as going astray but we have left considering going astray in spirit is as well a mistake. This is a misguidance in our times.

Namaz cannot be performed with impurity everyone knows this rule. If the clothes are impure then one can wash them to make it pure, if the floor is impure then washing it makes it pure, if the cloth has been purchased with haram (illegitimate) money, will washing the cloth make it pure? If someone’s land has been acquired by false means and a masjid has been constructed on that land, will laying down the best of marbles make that land pure? If the heart has ill thoughts about Allah, if the heart is filled with jealousy, bad intentions (for others), arrogance, pretention how will these impurities go away? Namaz will be performed by washing of outer impurities (on the body) how will the Namaz be performed with impurities of the heart? One rule is to wash the outer impurities which is called Jurisprudence of the outer body, another rule is to cleanse the heart of impurities which is called Jurisprudence for the spirit (cleanliness of the heart). My friends, just as mistakes in the outer cleanliness drowns one, likewise mistakes in the inner cleanliness (of the heart) drowns humans. This (cleanliness of the heart and of the body) requires being associated with someone. One who gets associated with someone for both cleansing processes (body and heart) Allah makes him complete and then Allah takes work from him. All our elders were given great spiritual status in this manner. Those whose spiritual benefit is spread across the world. There is no country, area, or a lane void of these benefits (of our elders). These elders were also given such status through this way (of spiritual cleansing). They associated themselves with one of the elders for both the cleansing of the body and the heart. One who attain the status of having cleansed themselves these were called Ulama by Allah and let us know that these Ulama will have the responsibility to bringing to an end the shortcomings and mistakes and bring about a balance by correcting mistakes.
